Transgender is always attractive to be examined, not only in context of social problems but also in culture phenomena, even in politics. Transgender men often become the object of phenomena. Undoubtedly, their existence becomes something to be laughed at or even to be mocked. This situation grows to be something which is familiar to our society. Their abnormality becomes society’s tools to cut transgender lives. Finally, they become alienated from society’s normality. It occurs not only in society real lives, but also in mass media culture. Transgender become the objects –valuable commodity- who produces profit for media capitalism.
In the other side, entertainment has continuously developed in Indonesian television. It indicated by the arising of various program format and content such as talk show, situation comedy, soap operas, TV serial & film. According to the constructionist, culture shown in television is a result of media workers constructionist. Reality appeared on television is the new one, which is often very different from the fact. The same thing happens to transgender reality which is reproduced in our television. This research would like to critically investigate how the position and social roles of transgender are represented through the content of broadcasted entertaining program.
This paper uses discourse analysis at its method. Therefore, it needs a certain context to understand the texts occur in films. There are some contexts used to analyze films which the characterizations are adopted from transgender lives. The beginning part of this paper would discuss a little part of films history in Indonesia which uses transgender as the actors. In the pant of analysis result, we would understand the social context in its accordance with the transgender. In the final part, this paper presents the comparison between the result of contextual analysis and textual analysis. One of the principle that is used to sharpen this analysis is Pieere Bourdieu’s theoretic approach about the domination of discourse and social representation in accordance with analysis.
There are 4 steps that need to be established. First, seeing the general picture of Indonesian films which use transgender as the actors; second, seeing the fact and real situation of transgender; third, comparing their real reality and appearance reality (in reality formed by media); fourth, seeing imbalance of reality based on experts perspective. Although the final result is general analysis, those 4 steps will see comprehensively how transgender are treated in Indonesian mass media. The final part of this research would like to focus on the attitudes toward this situation in internal media circumstances to be solutions.
